Finally Here!

Books Back In Stock . . .

I received these bad boys about twenty minutes ago.

CIMG0106

I've got a long list of people who've ordered books over the past week or two, and I just want to let all of you know that I'm currently scrambling to get these things packaged up and shipped out to you! I really appreciate your patience!

Just a reminder that the sale on YHT books ends on May 30! Take advantage of the free domestic and international shipping, and score yourself three YHT books (Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and the one-shot comic book) for a mere $10! Just shoot me an e-mail at wesmolebash@gmail.com letting me know you want the YHT Book Bundle, and I'll send you an invoice via PayPal. It's that easy!

Guitar Hero . . .

It's true that I've been addicted to Guitar Hero, lately. The game is very addictive and the replay value is very high. I've gotten sick of playing career mode, so now I simply play the "Quick Play" mode so I can rock out to my favorite songs in whatever order I want.

Speaking of video games, I finally picked up a used copy of Mass Effect for the XBox 360. So far it's a very fun game, and it reminds me a lot of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on the old XBox. KOTOR is still one of my all-time favorite video games, and Mass Effect is quite reminiscent in its gameplay. I'm not very far into the game, so I'll give you an updated review once I get into the guts of the story.

I don't know if any of you have noticed, but video games are expensive now. It's sixty bucks for a brand new game these days! I think it's sad that gas prices have even caused the cost of video games to skyrocket in price! Actually, I'm not sure that gas prices have anything to do with the rising costs of video games, but we gotta blame it on something, don't we?

Heh, they aren't as bad as they used to be. I remember paying $70 for Super Mario RPG.

I personally blame the rising cost of my video games to rising gas prices. I mean not only do I have to spend $60 on a new game, but I have to drive to the stinking store to buy it.

I got a kick out of May 12th strip because it is pretty much verbatim of what goes on in my house when the bf comes home with a new game. The only thing I can hope for is that it's a game that I want to play too!

Umm... game prices kinda went up when the Xbox 360 launched. 360 and PS3 games are typically $60 at game launch and have been for the life of the consoles. Gas prices had no impact on it. :)

Aye, it's a complicated and unfortunate pull of multiple factors.

For instance, back in the SNES days some more complicated games costed as much as 70$ a piece... part of it was because cartridges cost(ed) orders of magnitude more money to produce than CDs, and partly because the programming tools available for console platforms weren't matured to the point needed for development, resulting in long development times and high pay for the few people who could do it.

Now, we have cheap production with CDs, and readily available tools... but as systems have allowed for more and more impressive graphics/physics/etc... the amount of people needed to develop a game, and the amount of time/resources it takes, has gone up exponentially.

Where back in the Atari days a single developer could make, test and ship a game, currently it could take dozens - sometimes hundreds - of people to make a game, and it's not guaranteed to sell well or even break even. You might need physics developers, graphics developers, a small army of 2D and 3D artists, writers, testers, voice actors, translators... it's gotten pretty crazy out there. =)

I personally think that new release games currently cost about twice as much as a "mainstream" audience would be willing to pay for it... but how the game industry can get it to that price point, I don't know. =(

Anyways, sorry for the digression. =) I'm eager to see what happens to the Brian/Emaline breakup! Maybe Guitar Hero will bring them together? ;) =)

I agree that game cost pretty much comes down to the basics...
production...development... and of course, advertisement!

lets not forget the cost of a blank plastic disc!
oh internet, what would I do without you! downloading games before wasting money on them is best, especially since the nearest game store is 20 miles away ; (

You shoud check out GameFly - it's NetFlix for video games. It's about $23 a month for two games out at a time. I game a lot and it's the only way I can afford it. It's a little pricey, but it basically works out to buying 4 brand new games a year - worth it if you were going to spend the money anyway and want some more bang for your buck.

And there's the time investment. Even if you can afford a new game, when are you gonna find the time to play it? I have been working on Wild ARMS 3 for approximately the past four years now, putting in an average of one hour every other weekend. Apart from arcade-style oldies like Dig Dug, that's pretty much the only regular gaming I've been doing.

Adult life is hard.

Jackson - I hear ya, man! I was thinking the other day how much I used to play video games compared to now. When I was a senior in high school I had the Nintendo 64, and I beat every game I owned for that system (except for Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask because I got really bored with it). Now I'm lucky to make it through the majority of a game before real life calls and I gotta put it down. I think I finished half the games I owned on my XBox, and I haven't finished any of the games I own on XBox 360.

Read an article a few years back that basically blamed the gamers for the bigger pricetag. Not that it's our fault, but that we fell for a marketing scam. When they started puttting out all the 'special edition' games at the end of the Xbox/PS2 generation, it wasn't really bonus features, but a marketing test to see if end users would be willing to pay 60-70 bucks for a single console game. Did you buy the 'Limited Edition' of Halo 2 for $10 extra, or Madden '0X for $20 extra? What did you get? A metal box and a booklet, and a CD of extra behind the scenes footage that would be at home in a free disc you got for a random purchase at Best Buy or Burger King. Yeah, you took the bait, and now you're f**ked.

Now I have to wonder if my delusional purchase of the Special Edition DVD of Constantine (not worth it) or Directors cut of the Abyss (worth it) are the reason that Blu-ray/HD.DVDs cost 40+ bucks.
