Job Searchin'

Applying for jobs on the internet can be a joke, because half the time I don't even think a human looks at your application. If the criteria in your resume and application don't perfectly meet the standards they're looking for, then your application is filtered out by some web program that generates an e-mail saying, "Thanks for applying, but you don't have the necessary qualifications for the job." Truth is, I probably don't have the necessary qualifications for some of the jobs I've been applying for, but I'd rather hear it from a human than a computer.

Personally the most frustrating part about looking for a job on the internet is all of the sales jobs you end up getting offered. I put my resume up on Monster.com and I had insurance agencies and telemarketing firms and all kinds of cruddy places wanting me to work for commission and a $2/hour base pay. I've found (from personal experience) that your friends might be the best resource you have in finding work.

Yeah, Networking can be a real lifesaver.

As far as cruddy computers telling you you're not qualified... wait till you get a rejection POSTCARD, Wes.

Good luck on the search.

like anything on the internet, the ridiculously large numbers involved distort everything. By nothing more than percentages, there's going to be a few good jobs mixed in there somewhere, and tons of crap. I've found my last 2 (3 if you count the fact that my old employer re-hired me again for a nice bump in pay) on monster.com. But I've also had those times when kind of desperate for a new gig, and applying to another 10 each day. But I do have an awesome true story(in a sad/funny sort of way).

I'm a tech/engineer/etc with years of experience, but I'm not specialized in any field and I don't have an engineering degree, so I've bounced around between tech jobs. Well I've had head-hunters contact me via monster for gigs before, but not one has ever turned into an actual offer. Well, I got this letter from a company called C.E.C. Entertainment. The letter went on for several paragraphs talking about this technology position with management potential, and so on, the whole time refering to the company as CEC, and I was considering replying... until the very end. It thanked me, etc.... and down at the very bottom beneath the signature was what CEC stood for....

Chuck. E. Cheese.

I don't knock anyone for their vocation, but at age 29, I don't think being paid my bonus in free pizza and skee-ball tokens is going to cut it. But the laugh was worth the time spent reading it.

I was job searching a few months ago and actually got really lucky in my new job by using an employment agency. There are a million of them out there, and some of them even specialize in certain fields. I'm still temping right now, but it will be permanent soon with killer benefits and good pay.

It might be worth an afternoon of your time, you know? Good luck and I hope you find something soon!

I found a great site for gettin' all those connections well, connected is http://linkedin.com

I was introduced to it back at Siggraph 07 and it's been a lifesaver in keeping my resume up-to-date as well as keeping in touch with all those animators and HR reps from big studios ;)

Keep on truckin' Wes!

I asked the CEO of my employer today if there was any possibility of hiring this year, and got an affirmative for the summer, if you get hired on after the probationary period the work is fairly easy and the bay and benefits pretty good.
1.union shop,
2.when we are busy lots of OT
3.insurance reasonable
4.Journeyman wage 1-5 years, depending on how good you are, currently 17.33 hr, probably start you at 10-12 per.
I asked the HR person and she said send in a resume.
let me know if you are interested.

Down side: west side of Columbus, so that would be 40 or so miles for you.
not hiring currently, but will be by may.
