REVI3W3D!!!

Not Everyone Is Gonna Love You . . .

The Midnight Cartooner over at Digital Strips gave YHT Vol. 2 a less-than-stellar review. It's tough to read reviews like this one, but I appreciate honest criticism whether positive or negative. Midnight did a good job, so go check it out. And when you're done, read the small interview I had with Midnight that correlates with the lackluster review.

Over at the Webcomic Hack, Michael Collins believes that Andy was an a**hole last week, the Emaline story-arc should've had some follow up, and my neck shadows are annoying. But other than that, he really enjoys my comic and he even gave a plug for the one-shot coming out this summer. So go check out the review!

In all seriousness, as negative as these reviews are, I'm actually very appreciative of them. These aren't the standard "I-don't-like-the-artwork" or "The-jokes-aren't-funny" criticisms. Both of these reviewers are familiar with comic and have actual concerns about the way I'm handling my strip. Yeah, it's tough to hear. But, at the same time, it's pretty cool to know that someone cares enough to write detailed blog posts when they feel YHT isn't living up to it's potential.

Thanks for the posts, guys. I tried to think of something really hateful to say in response to your criticisms, but all I could think of is, "You guys are booger heads!" Take from that what you will.

Wow, he thought Andy was a prick cause of the Food Lady remark? That's fairly lame. I found it to be right on character with Andy and, judging from the other responses on the forums, many of us have used that line or something to its effect with our spouses on more than one occasion. How THAT makes Andy a prick is never really explained, nor does it make any sense...

What a booger head.

andys expectation of katies knowledge of food seems to parallel katies expectation that andy will take the trash to the dumpster.

i had never noticed the amish chin strap look but i do think that it sounds good as a putdown.

wes, have a character call another character an amish chin strap. or even better, write in an amish character. (please note, do neither of these wes; however guest stripper *hehehe* it would be very inside and gimmicky but funny)

I am indeed a booger head, I concede. I just thought that sometimes Andy's stupidity reaches over into genuine callousness. It's just a feeling that I got, based on nothing more than what it made me feel - as art should do, whether good or bad. I'm not trying to rationalize away my inadequate appraisal of Andy as a character, but I just wanted to let you peek once more into my obviously inadequate mind.

In other news, I really do enjoy the strip and am wondering why it's not doing as well as you'd hoped. That's madness I say, MADNESS.

Oh man, yeah that wasn't fair calling Andy an ass hole! He's been more demeaning than that, anyway. But I'd take it lightly..it's obvious he has respect for women and is not a sexist creep.

I'm defending Andy like he's a real person. ;D That's how much I love this comic.

Man, those reviews were harsh. I was going through a roller coaster of emotions. :( But you took it well, Wes. I'm proud. But don't you dare change your style (unless you want to, of course, heh.)! I thought the dark line under the faces is a nice, stylistic touch. It makes up for the lack of shading, too.

Keep up the good stuff. YHT is on a short list of webcomics I love!

Blackmarket - Dude! Thanks for poppin' in! You don't have to justify or defend your statements about my cartoon. You are entitled to your opinions, and I appreciate you sharing them on your blog. I thought your review was very fair.

Plus, you gave a plug for my books! I can't *totally* hate you for that!

Anonymous - Thanks for the kind words! The reviews were definitely tough to read, but I think they could've been way worse. Heck, both guys admitted to being fans of YHT. Maybe that's what makes the reviews a little harder to hear . . .

Thanks for havin' my back, though! And don't worry - I'm not changing my style anytime soon. :)

Not everyone is going to like your strip. Meh. I really like it. Andy is very cute, and gives hope that there are men who love their wives. You're doing a good job on the female perspective too. I like your style, it's consistant and shows the emotions well. Reminds me of Rose is Rose.

Anyway. Good Job. :D

Thanks for the kind words, Lori-Ann. Rose is Rose has always been a beautifully drawn comic, and Pat Brady's work has influenced my artwork in several ways. It's nice when people notice similarities. :)

It's possible that so many of us guys relate to Andy that we take comments like these personally. Wes, you seem to take these kinds of comments for what they are and move on. That's what we like about you and quite honestly, about your characters.

As far as style goes, I read your strip every day and curse the way I draw mine. I have friends that KNOW I draw a comic and when I see them that say 'did you read YHT today? It was awesome'. I'd cuss at you too if I didn't already know they were right.

Also, the comment about Rose is Rose is right on the money. Although the styles are really different, there's this 'frozen motion' that makes the characters appear to be moving without a blur or anything. I don't know how either of you do it, but it's really cool.
